Organizational Statement
- The TeenTix Press Corps Program promotes critical thinking, communication, and information literacy through criticism and journalism practice for teens. Since 2006, some of the city’s most talented professional arts critics from The Seattle Times, The Stranger, Seattle Globalist, (and more!) have taught over 700 teens through workshops and intensives focused on arts criticism training. We have published over 500 reviews of arts and culture events that live on the TeenTix Blog. The Press Corps has an explicit goal of disrupting systems of oppression within arts media that have kept marginalized voices out of arts journalism. Since our re-launch in Spring 2018, the Press Corps has trained 186 teens in the craft of arts criticism through out-of-school arts journalism Intensive Workshops and residencies at public high schools.

In a 3 Lesson Unit, the residency would consist of:
1 Lesson pre-event
1 Art experience
1 Lesson post-event
Students learn the basics of arts criticism, experience an art event, and practice reflective writing about their art experience.
In a 4 Lesson Unit, the residency would consist of:
1 Lesson pre-event
1 Art experience
2 Lessons post-event
Students learn the basics of arts criticism, experience an art event, and practice critical review writing. Their reviews are edited by the Teaching Artist, and there is an opportunity for reviews to be published on the TeenTix blog.

Teaching Approach
- Teaching Philosophy + Approach
- The TeenTix Press Corps’ Arts Criticism 101 units are designed to empower young people to share their voice in the arts world and beyond. Arts Criticism 101 teaches young people to engage deeply with the art and media they experience and to think critically about why a piece of art resonates with them, and why it might not. We prioritize culturally responsive teaching and encourage students’ social emotional learning through reflection and peer to peer activities.
Our curriculum also builds the following 21st Century Skills:
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Creative and Critical Thinking
First hand art experiences are essential to our curriculum. TeenTix can connect classroom teachers with arts organizations to facilitate field trips to attend an art events, or to bring art into the classroom.
Arts Criticism units are taught by Press Corps teaching artists, who are also professional arts critics. Teaching artists are skilled arts interpreters, writers, and editors with deep knowledge about their specific arts genres.
