Rain City Rock Camp is the only nonprofit in the Seattle area that combines music education, gender-responsive programming and a commitment to positive social change. We center and support women, girls (cis and trans) and gender expansive folk, both in the content of our programming and in the identities of the mentors who are a part of our community. Participants in our programs receive instrument instruction from local musicians and write, rehearse and perform original songs with the support of mentors. And they do it all while ROCKING OUT in a supportive, empowering community!

RAIN CITY ROCK SCHOOL (virtual after school program): Our goal for Rain City Rock School (RCRS, named by one of our campers) is to help build real connections and support students’ creative engagement during a challenging school year. We’re going to keep rocking it out with instrument instruction, band formation, dance parties and workshops to help keep students engaged and connected to each other!  |  1) Instrument instruction—We’ll provide the instrument if you don’t have one! 2) Song creation in bands using Soundtrap. 3) Anti-racist discussions and activities using This Book is Anti-Racist by Tiffany Jewell as a guide. 4) Fun, wacky, & empowering programming with a focus on building relationships even across virtual landscapes. 5) A Power-Up Pack complete with Tour Guide, lanyard, and book to make the experience come to life. 6) Direct technology assistance and staff support—We are happy to loan technology as needed, and committed to ensuring that access to a device will not be a barrier to participation in RCRC’s after-school program. 7) 5 weeks of programming, twice weekly after school, culminating in an online showcase!

Sample Workshop Description: Teacher Professional Development
VIBE Dance Workshop: Description: To all of my Tik Tok dancers, let's build our own moves to the songs we create! If you are someone who likes to body roll to "say so", dance party in your bedroom, and/or enjoy moving your body in different ways, this is the space for you! In this space, we will explore how our own body can create unique movement to music, develop skills to piece that movement together to create a dance, and have the ability to use this choreography to teach others and/or bust out whenever we feel like it. We will focus on how we feel in our bodies and how movement can be used as a tool to tell our own stories. We will practice actively supporting others in their own movement, validate all movement/shapes/ choreography, and celebrate all parts of the process of learning more about ourselves. This space is for young people who are interested in movement at any capacity and are wanting to be a part of a supportive group that is willing to take risks. Goal: To feel empowered in your own physical body. To use your movement to tell your story. To celebrate and uplift other bodies in the space with you. We'll cover a sense of belonging, validating, and supporting everyone taking a risk. -- AUTHENTIC MEDIA Description: Let's explore how the media influences us and how we can influence it. We'll do some collaborative discussions about stereotypes, culture, and what it's like to create things in the world as YOU. Then it's time to and make your own unique collage to represent your alter ego. In the Authentic Media workshop we'll explore how the media influences the world and how we can influence it. We'll do some collaborative discussions about stereotypes, representation, and how dominant culture (including corporate motives) can affect the perception of reality through the media. After our conversations exploring social identity, it's time to explore authentic self-expressions. The campers will have art time devoted to making their own unique collages to represent their alter egos. Goal: Campers are encouraged to communicate a spectrum of self, thereby creating representative media and adding to diverse authenticity in the world.

Teaching Approach

Teaching Philosophy + Approach

ROCK CAMP TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: Our goals as instructors, camp counselors, band coaches, mentors and allies are:

To encourage collaboration, empowerment, self-expression, and mutual respect

To encourage self-discovery through hands-on experience and risk-taking

To favor action over words

To share the idea that there is no “correct” way of playing music

To strike a balance between technique and experimentation

To embrace team-teaching and support each other as volunteers

To create a world where girls and gender non-conforming individuals feel encouraged , supported, and valued more for what they do than how they look

To help every camper find their own voice, identify their own needs, and express them

To help campers develop a sense of confidence that they carry to other aspects of their lives
