Artistic Disciplines

Discipline
2, Storytelling Writing/Performance
Type
I teach through a cultural lens focusing on storytelling traditions of African, Irish, Native, and African-American people to create new forms that incorporate current performance/spoken word styles. Speculative fiction, Afro-Futurism, and creative non-fiction forms engage high school learners. I present poetry forms from haiku to hip hop using mentor texts from ancient writers through the Native-American, Chicano, and Harlem Renaissance and positive local artists. I focus on how forms originate, evolve and adopted across cultures and globally.

Teaching Approach

Teaching Philosophy + Approach
I see the arts as a way to inspire a practice of awareness. Through observation, movement and free-writing students learn to ignore their inner-critic and write stunning first drafts of poems and stories. Partnering with teachers begins with the observation day which allows me to know the preferred and best ways to work with each class. I share my broad goals for the residency based on responses from teachers about what they hope to gain as collaborators and what I hope to gain as well. This creates an peer-mentoring opportunity if desired. All planning begins before observation day based on conversations via email or face to face. I ask for thoughts about lesson plans and outcomes so that each lesson is tailored to the class' needs. We decide on the nature of the wrap-up before we begin so that activities supporting the lessons produce the culminating project.
Curriculum Integration Possibilities
I love curriculum integration! My favorite subjects are history, science, social studies, biology, environmental education, outdoor learning, including urban agriculture.
