Organizational Statement
Since its inception in 1975, the Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT), has served more than 4 million children for 45 seasons of creative professional theatre and arts education classes for the Puget Sound region, and is one of the most prominent theatre organizations for young audiences in the United States and the world. SCT’s mission is to provide children of all ages access to professional theatre, with a focus on new works, and theatre education. At SCT we are working to become an anti-racist organization, as such we value the contributions of teaching artists from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and work to create an inclusive culture both in our theatre and in our school classrooms. We strive to build programming that reflects the diversity of the United States, as well as the global society in which we live.

Sample Lesson Description: Student / Classroom Residencies
Story Drama, Pre K - 1st Grade
Take your students inside a storybook! Each class, students and our Teaching Artist will read a different book and explore elements of the story through acting, art, and storytelling. Students will discover the narrative process, work together as an ensemble, embody characters using voice, body, and imaginations, use creative problem solving skills, and engage in imaginative play while enjoying the best in children's literature. With over 180 titles in our library, every class is a new journey into the great beyond!
Social Emotional Storytelling & Movement, Pre-K – 5th Grade
Did you know dance and movement can help students explore how their emotions are shown and felt in their bodies? With the help of their Teaching Artist, students will discover body language, self-awareness, and self-management while listening to different types of music and expanding their movement vocabularies.
Improvisation, 3rd Grade- 12th Grade
In this fast-paced, creative environment, students learn the fundamentals of improv beginning with the all-important adage “yes, and…”. From there, they will practice creating stories without scripts or rehearsal using a wide variety of improv techniques, formats, and games. Warning: this art form is highly addictive.
Creative Drama for Mental Wellness, 6th Grade – 12th Grade
This program is designed to bring students and their teachers together in an immersive learning environment that is safe, active, and community focused. Guided by SCT teaching artists, participants engage in creative play to strengthen trust and collaboration, and then focus their energies inward using structured activities that encourage self-reflection. Research has shown that young people gain social-emotional skills when knowledge is embodied through practice. Creative Drama for Mental Wellness bridges theatre education with evidence-based strategies in SEL to help students develop self-awareness and make positive choices in addressing their mental health needs, even in situations that are unjust or outside of their control.  These concepts are rehearsed using role play exercises within the safety of the classroom so that they develop confidence to advocate for themselves when faced with challenges in the real world.

Teaching Approach

Teaching Philosophy + Approach
Theatre is more than what you see on stage. Young people who engage with theatre acquire skills essential to their social and emotional development: a healthy sense of personal identity, the ability to empathize with others, and imaginative ways of thinking. With SCT at Your School Programs, you can bring theatre directly to your classroom. SCT's expert Teaching Artists will lead your class in exciting and interactive activities that use drama and kinesthetic learning techniques to explore a wide variety of subjects including language arts, social justice, science, SEL, and of course, acting! All of these programs are carefully created to fulfill Common Core Standards and EALRs, and directly support what you do in the classroom every day.  Continuing scrolling to learn about our programs.

"SCT's residency provided time (and encouragement) for students to be silly, be themselves, try uncomfortable movements, sounds, and gestures within the ensemble games. This helped to inspire and motivate children who otherwise were not engaging in online instruction" - Elementary School Teacher "SCT's Creative Drama for Mental Wellness is a program that gives children a chance to be valued, to be seen, to be validated." - Educator at Hilltop Children's Center
