Organizational Statement
- Since 1994, our diverse offering of education programs has brought individuals from different communities and backgrounds into contact with one another. Working with elementary, middle school and high school youth, our experienced education staff—all qualified teaching artists—utilize strategies that promote creative and critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills to explore the diverse world of musical theater. We bring the three primary art forms of musical theater—dance, music, and acting—together to allow students to develop their creative voices and experience the world around them. We maintain a roster of teaching artists who are hired on an as-needed basis to teach individual workshops when our staff is unavailable. In addition, we use our strong relationships with local trade unions to foster mentorships with professional stage crew, designers, artisans, and theater technicians to provide students the opportunity to explore a variety of theater-related careers.
The 5th Avenue education staff, teaching artists, and mentors provide safe and supportive learning environments that foster creative and critical thinking, allow youth to take risks and develop new skills, and foster healthy and productive relationships with each other and a community of theater professionals.

- The 5th Avenue Theatre recognizes that when students are engaged in the arts they develop pathways for greater understanding of new and difficult concepts and content across the curriculum; they demonstrate self-discipline, motivation, and perseverance; they engage in creative problem solving; they feel empathy and reflect on the human experience; and they develop into life-long learners.
As an organization, The 5th Avenue Theatre seeks to create a community that offers theater for ALL. We work strategically toward inclusion of historically neglected and underserved groups and communities, with the ultimate goal of growing a theater community that is truly representative of our region. Our programs for youth empower students toward confident self-expression as well as celebrate students’ unique backgrounds and experiences.
Whether performed, read, or experienced live or filmed, musical theater texts are inherently rich and interdisciplinary. Interaction with musical theater performances and dramatic texts can serve a vital role in preparing K-12 students to reach core learning objectives while introducing students to an important aspect of America’s cultural heritage.
The 5th Avenue Theatre develops lessons that teach about musical theater as well as 21st Century skills: creative and critical thinking, communication, collaboration, perseverance, and growth mindset.
