Organizational Statement - Urban Artworks’ mission is to create public art that empowers young people and transforms communities. We have 3 core programs. 1. The Mural Apprentice Program (MAP) provides arts-based employment opportunities for youth with barriers to employment and education, including those who are in the juvenile justice system. Teens work together with professional teaching artists to research, design, and install murals throughout King County and beyond. 2. The Murals in Schools program provides opportunities for youth 1st - 12th to work alongside Teaching Artists to explore themes and issues, design, and install murals within their schools. Each school program we offer is customized to fit the needs of each school or classroom, and can be integrated within the standard curricula of each grade level. 3. Our Community Mural program works with business owners and organizations to facilitate interactive community engagement around the research, design, and installation of murals and public art in specific communities.

- Urban ArtWorks offers interactive visual arts programs that encourage participants to collaborate with their peers to explore themes, design, and install murals. We understand that some schools might not have the ability or desire to have a permanent mural installed on their walls. Please note that we do not need to paint the mural directly on a wall. We can also create murals on wood panels that can be set up indoors/outdoors on a freestanding frame, or they can be attached directly a to a wall.

Teaching Approach
- Teaching Philosophy + Approach
- Urban ArtWorks' goal is to create a professional, safe, and supportive environment for the youth participants in which their self-confidence can grow along with an improvement in peer communication skills. We work beyond young people's problems and focus on their strengths and skills to encourage growth. Collaborating with their peers to learn new art skills, research, and negotiate a final mural design, will create space for youth to develop deeper levels of empathy and enhance self-empowerment skills. By taking a positive risk in installing their work in a public location and demonstrating their acquired skills to their school community, the youth will have the opportunity to let their voices be heard.

- Testimonials from Schools
"Thank you! The mural is stunning—so beautiful. And the way the Teaching Artist guided our students in discovering their purpose and then designing and creating a piece of art that expressed that was impressive. It was fun and moving to be a part of. We are so excited to add it to our space and hope to work with you all again soon!"
Matt Harkleroad - Ballard High School Art
"I appreciated the Teaching Artist's excellent facilitation and her expert mural skills.! This was such an amazing experience."India Carlson - Co Department Chair Science Ballard HS

- When working with schools we customize our programs to fit the goals, needs, and budgets of the community we are working with. We can do projects where the whole school is involved or just work closely with one classroom. We can do short-term workshops up to a semester-long project. Our rate is $100 an hour for teaching and prep time. The cost of supplies will be dependent on the project, but we work with schools to keep supply costs at a minimum.
